| 01 May 2026 | Detained/Arrested | Date: May 1, 2026 Location: 200nm off Tenerife, Canary Islands (intercepted near Dakhla, Western Sahara) Nature of Incident: The Comoros-flagged cargo ship was intercepted by an elite unit of the Guardia Civil and discovered to be transporting a record-breaking shipment of cocaine. The drugs, consisting of 1,279 bales, were hidden within a concealed metal compartment in the hull. Voyage Details: Departed Freetown, Sierra Leone, on April 22; officially en route to Benghazi, Libya. Outcome: Authorities seized 30.2 tonnes of cocaine with an estimated street value of €812 million ($956 million), marking the largest single cocaine seizure in European history. All 23 crew members (17 Filipinos and 6 individuals from the Netherlands/Suriname/Angola) were detained without bail. A cache of firearms and assault rifles was discovered in the bow. The vessel was towed to the naval base at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria for further investigation. No injuries or pollution were reported. |
