Casualties

DateTypeDetails
20 May 2026OtherOn May 20, 2026, the UAE-managed LPG tanker Arrhenius arrived at the Baltic port of Ust-Luga, Russia, where an inspection by Russian security services (FSB) uncovered two magnetic explosive devices attached to the vessel's hull near the engine room. The mines, estimated to contain 7kg of explosive material each, were discovered during mandatory diver inspections implemented by Russian authorities to enhance port security. The vessel had previously departed Antwerp, Belgium, on May 16, 2026, following delays caused by port labor strikes. Russian investigative authorities concluded that the devices could not have been installed while the tanker was in Russian territorial waters, pointing toward a possible security breach elsewhere in the transit route. The crew was temporarily evacuated during the defusing and dismantling of the mines, but was later cleared to return to the vessel, which remained anchored off Ust-Luga awaiting further instructions for its onward voyage to Samsun, Turkey. No injuries or pollution were reported during the incident, and a criminal investigation is ongoing.
