| 12 Jun 2026 | War Damage | On June 12, 2026, the crude oil tanker Asteri (IMO 9282493) was escorted through the Bosphorus Strait under strict security measures following hull damage sustained during an attack at the port of Kavkaz. Key details of the incident and transit include:Attack and Damage: The tanker had been damaged by a Ukrainian uncrewed surface vessel (USV) at the Russian port of Kavkaz prior to its transit. Transit Security: To ensure the safety of the passage, the vessel was towed by tugs from the General Directorate of Coastal Safety. Vessel traffic through the Bosphorus was suspended in both directions for the duration of its passage. Outcome: The transit was completed without further incident, and normal traffic in the Bosphorus resumed shortly thereafter. The Asteri (flagged to Cameroon) is reportedly part of the "shadow fleet" often used to transport Russian oil in circumvention of international sanctions. This incident is part of a broader series of Ukrainian operations targeting Russia's maritime fuel infrastructure and shadow fleet vessels in the Black Sea region. |
