| 09 Jun 2026 | Other | The Turkish government has intervened to resolve the prolonged abandonment of the cargo ship Azra C, which had been detained in Istanbul since August 2025 due to serious safety deficiencies. Following the owner's arrest in January 2026 and the subsequent abandonment of the vessel, the majority of the crew were repatriated by March 2026. However, four seafarers remained on board to maintain the vessel's safety in accordance with international regulations. Conditions for these four remaining crew members deteriorated significantly by May 2026, with reports of near-depleted fuel and water supplies and nearly a year of unpaid wages. Following international attention and pressure via social media, Turkish Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu ordered an expedited rescue. At the end of the first week of June 2026, Turkey’s coastal safety authority took control of the vessel, removed the remaining crew, and transferred them to their consulate to facilitate repatriation. It remains unclear if the seafarers received their outstanding wages. No injuries or pollution were reported during the rescue operation. |

The vessel was subsequently abandoned by its owner, leaving the crew without support or responsibility for their welfare. The remaining sailors are owed over $53,000 in unpaid wages and fear that abandoning the ship would jeopardize their chances of recovery. The crew’s current conditions are critical: Provisions and Water: The ship has been without fresh water for over 20 days, and the crew reports that food supplies and fuel are expected to be exhausted within a week. Operational Status: As of early May 2026, the crew was running the emergency generator for only 5–6 hours daily to charge batteries and cook meals. Communication: The crew has been unable to reach the shipowner for more than two months and has received no updates from the local agent. Attempted Appeals: Despite issuing distress calls—including one via radio on May 7, 2026—and filing formal appeals with authorities in Kadıköy and the Port Authority, the seafarers report receiving no assistance or responses. While the Directorate General of Shipping in India stated it is working to assist the crew, noting that eight seafarers have already been repatriated, the remaining ten remain in a dire situation. |
