| 12 Jun 2026 | Fire | On June 12, 2026, the Icelandic fishing vessel Barði NK suffered a serious engine room fire and explosion while transiting north of the Faroe Islands. The vessel, which had just departed Tórshavn following a thorough engine overhaul and successful sea trials, was being sailed back to Iceland by a delivery crew of five. Incident Details: Investigators and the ship's skipper, Theodór Elvar Haraldsson, identified the cause as a ruptured high-pressure oil hose. The escaping oil struck a hot surface, immediately triggering a fireball and explosion in the engine room. Emergency Response: The crew's rapid response, credited to recent and rigorous emergency training under the "Alda" safety system, allowed them to smother the fire quickly and prevent a total loss of the vessel. Despite their efforts, the vessel lost all propulsion and drifted for over three hours before the Faroese patrol vessel Brimil arrived to establish a tow. Outcome: The Barði NK was towed back to Tórshavn on June 13, 2026. While there were no injuries, the engine room sustained extensive damage. Representatives from the owner (Síldarvinnslan hf), insurers, and the Icelandic marine accident investigation board have since conducted assessments on board. Repairs were initially estimated to take up to four weeks. |
