DateTypeDetails
20 May 2026Detained/ArrestedOn May 20, 2026, U.S. Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit conducted an interdiction and boarding of the Iranian-flagged oil tanker Celestial Sea in the Gulf of Oman. The vessel was intercepted following suspicions that it was attempting to bypass the U.S. maritime blockade on Iranian ports. Although the tanker had broadcasted its destination as Khor Fakkan, UAE, U.S. forces suspected this information was falsified and that the vessel was actually heading toward an Iranian port. After conducting an on-board search, U.S. forces directed the crew to alter their course and subsequently released the vessel. CENTCOM confirmed that this was the 91st commercial ship redirected since the blockade was implemented. The vessel had previously been identified by the NGO United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) as part of their blacklist, having operated under the name Harmony in 2023. No injuries or pollution were reported.
