Casualties

DateTypeDetails
14 Jun 2026Medical EmergencyOn June 14, 2026, Freddy José Farías Marcano, a 26-year-old Venezuelan merchant marine cadet, was found dead in his cabin aboard the tanker Few BPS while the vessel was approaching the port of Syracuse (Santa Panagia), Italy. Incident Circumstances: Mr. Farías Marcano was completing professional internships toward his maritime engineering degree. According to his family, he had expressed concerns about his situation on board in the days leading up to his death. Following a stopover in Egypt, the cadet reportedly appeared nervous and had formally requested to disembark from the vessel, a request his family claims was ignored by ship authorities. Family Demands: The victim’s family has denounced a lack of transparency and "absolute secrecy" from the vessel's operators, Columbia Shipmanagement Ltd. They have publicly demanded an independent, international autopsy to determine the true cause of death, strongly rejecting any possibility of the remains being cremated before a thorough forensic examination is conducted. Current Status: The family is currently seeking institutional support to expedite the repatriation of the cadet’s remains to Venezuela. As of June 23, 2026, the vessel had departed Italian waters and was moored at Siri, Greece. No official investigation findings have been released by the relevant authorities.
