The cruise ship had been traveling from southern Argentina across the Atlantic to the Canary Islands, with scheduled stops in St. Helena and Cape Verde. The patient was one of 14 Spanish nationals repatriated following the outbreak and was transferred to a high-level isolation unit at Gómez Ulla Hospital in Madrid. This instance marked the second confirmed case of hantavirus recorded in Spain. |
| 10 May 2026 | Medical Emergency | On May 10, 2026, the Dutch-flagged expedition cruise ship Hondius docked at the Port of Granadilla in Tenerife, Canary Islands, to disembark more than 100 passengers following a severe outbreak of Andes hantavirus on board. The majority of the passengers were subsequently repatriated to their home countries on dedicated flights under strict isolation protocols. The vessel departed Tenerife on May 11 with 25 crew members and two Dutch medical personnel remaining on board. It arrived at the Port of Rotterdam, Netherlands, on May 18, 2026, where the remaining crew disembarked into a specialized quarantine facility ashore while the vessel underwent intensive disinfection. The outbreak resulted in multiple confirmed infections and three fatalities among passengers. No environmental pollution was reported. |
