| 15 Apr 2026 | Engine Fault | On April 15, 2026, the 145-foot cargo vessel Mariana became disabled approximately 125 miles north-northwest of Saipan after suffering a starboard engine failure while Super Typhoon Sinlaku was approaching. Communication with the six crew members was lost on April 16. On April 18, a U.S. Coast Guard HC-130 aircraft located the vessel's overturned hull 34 nautical miles northeast of Pagan. Following a multinational search effort covering over 99,000 square miles, divers from the U.S. Air Force 31st Rescue Squadron recovered one deceased crew member from the interior of the wreck on April 21. Five crew members remain missing. Search teams, including assets from Japan and New Zealand, continue to look for survivors and an orange 12-person life raft spotted drifting in the area. Severe weather initially hampered the response and necessitated the temporary closure of regional ports. No pollution has been reported. |
